Empower Yourself Quick Guide

Empowering Latinas, Empowering Vidas.

Why This Guide?

A guide like this will provide you with the resources you need to empower yourself to improve your health. It can be hard to know what to do and where to start, and this guide is here to help you. This guide is here to remind you that your voice matters, your health matters, and you can feel good about your body.

Know That You Deserve Good Health

Taking care of your health is not selfish—it's powerful. You deserve to feel good in your body, mind, and spirit.

  • Your pain is real. Don’t ignore it or let others dismiss it.

  • You don’t need to “tough it out” alone—asking for help is strength.

  • Health is more than doctor visits—it includes mental, emotional, and menstrual health too.

Take Care of Your Mental Health

Mental health is just as important as physical health.

  • It's okay to feel sad, anxious, or overwhelmed—especially when juggling family, school, work, and expectations.

  • Talk to someone you trust: a friend, teacher, counselor, or hotline.

  • Dance, journal, pray, rest—whatever helps you breathe again.

  • Find culturally aware therapists or mental health groups (many offer free or sliding-scale options).

Understand Your Body and Menstrual Health

Your period is part of your power—not something to hide or be ashamed of.

  • Learn what a healthy period looks and feels like. If something’s off (pain, heavy bleeding, irregular cycles), talk to a provider.

  • Track your cycle—apps, calendars, or journals can help.

  • Know your options: pads, tampons, cups, period underwear. Use what feels right for you.

  • Menstrual equity matters: if you can’t afford products, you’re not alone. Many schools, clinics, and nonprofits can help.

Speak Up and Ask Questions at Appointments

You have a right to understand your health.

  • Prepare questions before going to the doctor.

  • Bring a friend, parent, or advocate if it helps.

  • Say: “Can you explain that again in simpler terms?” or “What are my other options?”

  • You deserve providers who respect you—don’t settle for less.

Find Resources Made For You

Seek out support made by and for Latina women.

  • Follow trusted pages and creators who uplift Latina health.

  • Look for youth clinics or school-based health centers in your area.

  • Join or start a health club at your school or community center.

Love Who You Are

Your culture is your strength.

  • Embrace your identity—your roots, your language, your story.

  • Being the "first" in your family to do something hard (get help, go to therapy, speak out) is courageous.

  • Self-love is revolutionary.

You Are Not Alone

There’s a whole community of Latinas just like you—learning, healing, and rising.
