The Problem

Young Latina women, particularly those from low-income communities, face significant barriers to healthy nutrition and physical activity. They are more likely to experience food insecurity, meaning that they struggle to access fresh, affordable food and are forced to rely on low-cost, unhealthy fast food options. In under-resourced schools, students may receive little to no education about nutrition or fitness, so it is harder to develop lifelong healthy habits. Many young Latinas also live in unsafe neighborhoods, limiting opportunities for exercise outdoors. Additionally, gym memberships, equipment, and fitness programs can be unaffordable.

Quick Statistics

  • 1 in 4 Latinos have food insecurity.

  • Latinos are twice as likely to be food insecure compared to white people.

  • In 96% of US counties, Latinos are more likely to be food insecure than white individuals.

Why This Guide?

You can empower yourself to improve your fitness and nutrition by focusing on education, community, self-advocacy, and your own unique strengths. You are building a healthier future for yourself and your community.

Learn About Nutrition from Culturally Relevant Sources

  • Explore balanced eating that includes traditional Latino foods—like beans, avocado, squash, and corn—while learning how to prepare them in nutritious ways.

  • Follow Latina dietitians and fitness experts on social media who provide bilingual, culturally informed tips.

Find Enjoyable Ways to Be Active

  • Choose activities you love—dancing, walking, playing sports, or YouTube workouts—and do them regularly, even in short bursts.

  • Invite friends or family to join you—movement is more fun and sustainable with community.

Make the Most of What You Have Access To

  • Use community resources like local food banks, farmers’ markets with discounts, or school programs that offer free meals or fitness activities.

  • If gyms are too expensive, try free home workouts, outdoor spaces, or walking groups in safe areas.

Advocate for Better Resources

  • Speak up at school or in your community about the need for healthier meals, fitness programs, or safe recreational spaces.

  • Join or start initiatives that push for better food and wellness education in schools.

Talk About It—and Break the Stigma

  • Normalize conversations about health, body image, and self-care in your circles.

  • Challenge harmful stereotypes and unrealistic beauty standards by embracing your body and promoting strength over appearance.

Build a Support Network

  • Connect with other young Latinas who are also focused on health goals—this can make you feel more motivated and less alone.

  • Share recipes, celebrate wins, and support one another through challenges.
